Historic and Native American Ceramics in Central and South Texas

Due, in part, to the location of the Center in San Antonio, which is home to a variety of early Spanish missions, CAR personnel have had a long interest in historic, as well as Native American, ceramics. Following the work of Ms. Anne A. Fox, a long time staff member at CAR, much of this interest has focused on ceramic typology and chronology.  Under the direction of Kristi Ulrich, CAR has compiled Fox’s efforts into a Center publication, A Guide to Ceramics from Spanish Colonial Sites in Texas. The well-illustrated volume summarizes aspects of over 35 different ceramic types that have been found on historic archaeological sites in the region. Information on ordering this publication.

An additional ceramic research endeavor, conducted by Antonia Figueroa, focuses on Native American ceramic wares. Working from a functional perspective, Ms. Figueroa is focused on Goliad ware and Leon Plain, and is documenting variability in a variety of elements in these Native ceramic types.
