The Canon Ranch Project: Archaeology Just West of the Pecos
In 2005, Mr. George Canon and CAR-UTSA developed an agreement that allowed personnel from the Center to conduct archaeological research on an approximately 17,000 acre ranch located just west of the Pecos River in Pecos County, Texas. Under the ownership of the Canon family since the later part of the 19th century, the Canon Ranch contains a wide variety of archaeological remains dating from throughout the prehistoric and into the historic period. The ranch, listed as an Archeological District on the National Register of Historic Places, contains a variety of archaeological resources, including a high density of burned rock middens. Raymond Mauldin, Jennifer Thompson, Cynthia Munoz, and Leonard Kemp recently visited the Ranch, and are in the process of developing a multi-year project to document archaeological remains on the facility.
